Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इति उक्तो मुनिना तेन राजा उवाच मुनिम् तदा ।
न हि शक्तो अस्मि संग्रामे स्थातुम् तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥ ॥१-२०-२०॥
Iti ukto muninā tena rājā uvāca munim tadā । Na hi śakto asmi saṃgrāme sthātum tasya durātmanaḥ ॥ ॥1-20-20॥
Translation
Having been spoken to thus by the Sage, the King then said to the Sage: "I am indeed not capable of standing in battle against that evil-minded one."
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुनि के द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, राजा ने तब मुनि से कहा—"मैं उस दुरात्मा (रावण) के सामने युद्ध में खड़े होने में समर्थ नहीं हूँ।"
English Commentary
Upon hearing the name "Ravana," Dasharatha loses all composure. He ignores the mention of the subordinates (Maricha and Subahu) and focuses entirely on the overlord. He bluntly admits his incapacity (na hi shaktosmi) to face Ravana. The King realizes that engaging with Ravana's agents invites the wrath of Ravana himself, a prospect that terrifies him into total submission.
हिंदी टीका
रावण का नाम सुनते ही दशरथ का बचा-खुचा साहस भी टूूट जाता है। वे मारीच और सुबाहु को भूल जाते हैं और सीधे रावण के भय से ग्रसित हो जाते हैं। वे स्पष्ट स्वीकार करते हैं—'न हि शक्तो अस्मि' (मैं समर्थ नहीं हूँ)। एक चक्रवर्ती राजा का यह स्वीकार करना कि वह शत्रु के सामने खड़ा भी नहीं हो सकता, रावण के आतंक की गहराई को दर्शाता है। दशरथ को लगता है कि यदि राम ने मारीच-सुबाहु को मारा, तो रावण से युद्ध अनिवार्य हो जाएगा।
