Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सबलो वा मुनिश्रेष्ठ सहितो वा मम आत्मजैः ।
कथम् अपि अमर प्रख्यम् संग्रामाणाम् अकोविदम् ॥ ॥१-२०-२४॥
Sabalo vā muniśreṣṭha sahito vā mama ātmajaiḥ । Katham api amara prakhyam saṃgrāmāṇām akovidam ॥ ॥1-20-24॥
Translation
Even with my army, O best of Munis, or accompanied by my sons, (I cannot fight him). How then (can I give) that god-like boy who is unskilled in warfare?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! अपनी सेना के साथ होते हुए या अपने (अन्य) पुत्रों के साथ होते हुए भी (मैं रावण से नहीं लड़ सकता)। तो फिर मैं उस (राम) को कैसे (भेजूं) जो देवताओं के समान सुंदर है किन्तु युद्धों से अनजान है?
English Commentary
Dasharatha contrasts his own military might with Rama's innocence. Even if backed by the sabala (army) and his other sons, Dasharatha feels hopeless. He describes Rama as amara prakhyam (resembling an immortal/god-like in beauty) but sangramanam akovidam (unskilled/ignorant of battles). The rhetorical question "Katham api" (How even/in any way?) underscores the absurdity of sending a novice, beautiful boy to fight a monster whom even the King fears.

यह श्लोक दशरथ के इंकार का अंतिम और भावुक हिस्सा है (जो अगले श्लोक में 'न दास्यामि' के साथ पूरा होता है)। दशरथ राम को 'अमर प्रख्यम्' (देवताओं जैसा सुंदर/सुकुमार) कहते हैं, जो उनकी कोमलता को दर्शाता है, और 'संग्रामाणाम् अकोविदम्' (युद्ध कला में अनभिज्ञ) कहते हैं। पिता की दृष्टि में राम एक अबोध बालक हैं, योद्धा नहीं। वे कहते हैं कि जब मैं पूरी सेना के साथ भी रावण का सामना नहीं कर सकता, तो इस नादान बालक को कैसे भेज सकता हूँ?
