यज्ञ विघ्न करौ तौ ते न एव दास्यामि पुत्रकम् ।
मारीचः च सुबाहुः च वीर्यवन्तौ सुशिक्षितौ ॥ ॥१-२०-२६॥
Yajña vighna karau tau te na eva dāsyāmi putrakam |
Mārīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca vīryavantau suśikṣitau ॥1-20-26॥
Translation
Those two, Maricha and Subahu, are the ones creating obstacles in your Yajna. They are incredibly powerful and highly trained in warfare. Therefore, I will not give my son.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे दोनों, मारीच और सुबाहु, आपके यज्ञ में विघ्न डालने वाले हैं। वे अत्यंत बलवान और युद्ध कला में सुशिक्षित हैं। इसलिए मैं अपने पुत्र को नहीं दूंगा।
English Commentary
Dasharatha further justifies his refusal. He highlights not just the cruelty of the demons but their competence, describing them as su-shikshitau (well-trained). As a king, he assesses the enemy's capability and believes that Rama, still a student, is ill-equipped to face such veteran warriors. While his strategic assessment stems from love, it stands in direct contradiction to the unconditional promise he made to the sage moments earlier.

दशरथ अपने इनकार के कारणों को और स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे केवल राक्षसों की क्रूरता नहीं, बल्कि उनकी 'सुशिक्षित' (युद्ध कला में निपुण) होने की बात करते हैं। एक राजा के रूप में, वे शत्रु की क्षमता का आकलन कर रहे हैं और उन्हें लगता है कि राम, जो अभी शिक्षा ले ही रहे हैं, उन अनुभवी योद्धाओं का सामना नहीं कर पाएंगे। यह भय तर्कसंगत प्रतीत होता है, किन्तु यह उस वचन के विरुद्ध है जो उन्होंने ऋषिवर को पहले दिया था।
