Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तयोः अन्यतरम् योद्धुम् यास्यामि स सुहृत् गणः ।
अन्यथा त्वनुनेष्यामि भवन्तम् सह बान्धव ॥ ॥१-२०-२७॥
Tayoḥ anyataram yoddhum yāsyāmi sa suhṛt gaṇaḥ |
Anyathā tvanuneṣyāmi bhavantam saha bāndhava ॥1-20-27॥
Translation
To fight either of them, I will go myself, accompanied by my friends and army. Otherwise, along with my kinsmen, I beseech you (for forgiveness).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन दोनों में से किसी एक से भी लड़ने के लिए मैं स्वयं अपनी सेना और मित्रों के साथ चलूंगा। अन्यथा, मैं अपने बंधु-बाँधवों सहित आपकी (क्षमा) प्रार्थना करता हूँ।
English Commentary
This is Dasharatha's final counter-offer. He proposes to go himself instead of Rama. By mentioning his army and friends, he shows he is ready to deploy state resources to protect the sage, provided Rama is left out of it. This does not reflect a lack of courage on his part, but rather an overwhelming attachment. His plea for understanding at the end reveals that while he fears the sage's curse, his fear of losing Rama is far greater.

यह दशरथ का अंतिम प्रस्ताव है। वे राम के बदले 'स्वयं' जाने का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। 'सुहृत् गणः' का अर्थ है कि वे पूरी सेना और मंत्रियों के साथ जाने को तत्पर हैं। यह उनकी वीरता को नहीं, बल्कि राम के प्रति उनकी आसक्ति को दिखाता है। अंत में वे विनयपूर्वक प्रार्थना भी करते हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वे ऋषि के क्रोध से डरते भी हैं, लेकिन पुत्र-मोह उस डर से बड़ा है। वे धर्मसंकट में फँसे एक असहाय पिता की भांति व्यवहार कर रहे हैं।
