Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अहम् एव धनुष्पाणिः गोप्ता समर मूर्धनि ।
यावत् प्राणान् धरिष्यामि तावत् योत्स्ये निशाचरैः ॥ ॥१-२०-५॥
Aham eva dhanuṣpāṇiḥ goptā samara mūrdhani । Yāvat prāṇān dhariṣyāmi tāvat yotsye niśācaraiḥ ॥ ॥1-20-5॥
Translation
I myself, bow in hand, will act as the protector at the forefront of the battle. As long as I hold my life-breath, I will fight against those night-wanderers.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं स्वयं हाथ में धनुष लेकर युद्ध के मोर्चे पर (यज्ञ का) रक्षक बनूँगा। जब तक मेरे शरीर में प्राण रहेंगे, तब तक मैं उन निशाचरों (राक्षसों) से युद्ध करूँगा।
English Commentary
Dasharatha assumes the stance of a warrior here to compensate for his refusal to send Rama. By stating he will stand at the samara murdhani (the head or forefront of battle), he assures the Sage that he will not lead from the back but will personally face the danger. The phrase yavat pranan dharishyami (as long as I hold life) underlines his desperate commitment. He is offering a "life for a life" deal—pledging his own survival to spare his son from the battlefield.

यहाँ दशरथ एक पिता और एक क्षत्रिय राजा की मिली-जुली भूमिका में हैं। 'धनुष्पाणिः' (हाथ में धनुष लिए हुए) शब्द का प्रयोग कर वे अपनी सक्रिय युद्ध-क्षमता का विश्वास दिला रहे हैं। वे यह कहना चाहते हैं कि यद्यपि वे वृद्ध हैं, उनका क्षत्रिय तेज अभी क्षीण नहीं हुआ है। 'यावत् प्राणान् धरिष्यामि' (जब तक प्राण हैं) कहकर वे अपनी अंतिम सांस तक ऋषि की सेवा करने की प्रतिज्ञा करते हैं, बशर्ते कि राम को युद्ध में न भेजा जाए। यह एक प्रकार का सौदा है—राम की सुरक्षा के बदले राजा अपने प्राणों की बाजी लगा रहे हैं।
