न च असौ रक्षसा योग्यः कूट युद्धा हि राक्षसा ।
विप्रयुक्तो हि रामेण मुहूर्तम् अपि न उत्सहे ॥ ॥१-२०-८॥
Na ca asau rakṣasā yogyaḥ kūṭa yuddhā hi rākṣasāḥ । Viprayukto hi rāmeṇa muhūrtam api na utsahe ॥ ॥1-20-8॥
Translation
Nor is he fit to fight the Rakshasas, for Rakshasas fight with deceit. Separated from Rama, I cannot bear to live even for a moment.

वह राक्षसों से लड़ने योग्य नहीं है, क्योंकि राक्षस 'कूट युद्ध' (छल-कपट का युद्ध) करते हैं। राम से अलग होकर मैं एक मुहूर्त (कुछ क्षण) भी जीवित रहने का उत्साह नहीं रखता।
English Commentary
Dasharatha highlights the asymmetry of the warfare. Rama is trained in Dharma Yuddha (righteous warfare), while the demons practice Kuta Yuddha (deceitful/guerilla warfare), involving invisibility and sorcery. The King fears this mismatch will be fatal for his noble son. He concludes with an emotional ultimatum: separation from Rama for even a muhurta (48 minutes/moment) strips him of the will to live (na utsahe). He is essentially saying that taking Rama is equivalent to killing the King.

यहाँ 'कूट युद्धा' (धोखे से युद्ध करने वाले) शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। धर्मयुद्ध के नियमों का पालन करने वाले क्षत्रिय के लिए मायावी युद्ध सबसे कठिन चुनौती होती है। दशरथ का डर है कि राम सीधे युद्ध में तो जीत सकते हैं, लेकिन छल-कपट के सामने वे भोले साबित होंगे। अंत में, दशरथ अपना सबसे बड़ा भावनात्मक अस्त्र प्रयोग करते हैं—यदि राम गए, तो वियोग में उनके प्राण चले जाएंगे। 'न उत्सहे' का अर्थ है कि जीवन जीने का उत्साह ही समाप्त हो जाएगा।
