जीवितुम् मुनि शार्दूल न रामम् नेतुम् अर्हसि ।

English Commentary
The King pleads for his own life implicitly by begging for Rama's stay. Addressing Vishvamitra as Muni Shardula (Tiger among Sages) and Suvrata (One of good vows), Dasharatha tries to appeal to the Sage's nobility and compassion. The phrase yadi va (or if...) marks a pivot in the conversation. Realizing that a flat refusal might be impossible or dangerous given the Sage's power, Dasharatha prepares to offer a conditional acceptance in the following verses.

दशरथ अब पूर्णतः याचना की मुद्रा में हैं। वे विश्वामित्र को 'मुनि शार्दूल' (मुनियों में सिंह) कहकर सम्मान दे रहे हैं ताकि उनका क्रोध न भड़के। वे अपनी जीवन रक्षा की भीख मांग रहे हैं, यह कहते हुए कि राम का रुकना ही राजा का जीवन है। श्लोक के उत्तरार्ध में राजा थोड़ा झुकते हैं—'यदि वा' (अथवा यदि)—यह संकेत है कि वे ऋषि के हठ को देख रहे हैं और अब एक समझौता (compromise) करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं, जो अगले श्लोक में स्पष्ट होगा।
