तत् श्रुत्वा वचनम् तस्य स्नेह पर्याकुलाक्षरम् ।
समन्युः कौशिको वाक्यम् प्रति उवाच महीपतिम् ॥ ॥१-२१-१॥
Tat śrutvā vacanam tasya sneha paryākulākṣaram |
Samanyuḥ kauśiko vākyam prati uvāca mahīpatim ॥1-21-1॥
Translation
Hearing those words of the King, which were faltering with affection and attachment, the angry Kaushika (Vishwamitra) replied to the Lord of the Earth.

राजा के स्नेह और मोह से भरे हुए उन वचनों को सुनकर, क्रोधित विश्वामित्र ने राजा दशरथ को उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
This verse contrasts the emotional states of the King and the Sage. Dasharatha’s speech is described as sneha paryakulaksharam—his words are faltering, heavy with parental attachment. In contrast, Vishwamitra is samanyuh (filled with fury). The sage views Dasharatha's emotional plea not as love, but as a weakness and a breach of integrity. This marks a critical juncture where personal emotion clashes directly with the solemn duty of keeping one's word.

इस श्लोक में राजा और ऋषि की मनोदशा का विरोधाभास है। दशरथ 'स्नेह पर्याकुलाक्षरम्' हैं—यानी उनका गला पुत्र-मोह में रूंधा हुआ है और शब्द लड़खड़ा रहे हैं। दूसरी ओर, विश्वामित्र 'समन्युः' (क्रोधयुक्त) हैं। विश्वामित्र दशरथ के प्रेम को कमजोरी और 'वचन-भंग' के रूप में देख रहे हैं। यहाँ से कथा एक गंभीर मोड़ लेती है जहाँ एक राजा की व्यक्तिगत भावनाएं उसके राजधर्म और सत्यनिष्ठा से टकराती हैं।
