पूर्वम् अर्थम् प्रति श्रुत्य प्रतिज्ञाम् हातुम् इच्छसि ।
राघवाणाम् अयुक्तोऽयम् कुलस्य अस्य विपर्ययः ॥ ॥१-२१-२॥
Pūrvam artham prati śrutya pratijñām hātum icchasi |
Rāghavāṇām ayukto'yam kulasya asya viparyayaḥ ॥1-21-2॥
Translation
"Having first promised to fulfill my request, you now wish to abandon your pledge? This is unworthy of the Raghus; it is a reversal of your lineage's tradition."

"पहले मेरी प्रार्थना स्वीकार करके अब तुम अपनी प्रतिज्ञा तोड़ना चाहते हो? रघुकुल के वंशजों के लिए यह अनुचित है; यह तुम्हारे कुल की मर्यादा (परंपरा) के विपरीत है।"
English Commentary
This verse lays the foundation for the famous ethos of the Ramayana: the Raghu lineage values truth above life itself. Vishwamitra sternly reminds Dasharatha that he is a descendant of Raghu. For this lineage, breaking a promise is viparyaya (a disastrous reversal of nature). The sage challenges Dasharatha not merely as a father, but as the custodian of a dynasty built on the pillar of absolute integrity.

यह रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध सिद्धांतों में से एक की नींव है—"रघुकुल रीति सदा चली आई, प्राण जाय पर वचन न जाई।" विश्वामित्र दशरथ को याद दिलाते हैं कि वे साधारण राजा नहीं, बल्कि 'राघव' हैं। इक्ष्वाकु और रघु के वंश में सत्य ही सबसे बड़ा धर्म है। प्रतिज्ञा तोड़ना इस कुल के लिए 'विपर्यय' (विनाश या विपरीत आचरण) है। ऋषि यहाँ राजा को व्यक्तिगत पिता के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि एक महान कुल के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में चुनौती दे रहे हैं।
