इक्ष्वाकूणाम् कुले जातः साक्षात् धर्म इव अपरः ।
धृतिमान् सुव्रतः श्रीमान् न धर्मम् हातुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥१-२१-६॥
Ikṣvākūṇām kule jātaḥ sākṣāt dharma iva aparaḥ |
Dhṛtimān suvrataḥ śrīmān na dharmam hātum arhasi ॥1-21-6॥
Translation
"Born in the lineage of the Ikshvakus, you are like Dharma incarnate. You are steadfast, of noble vows, and glorious. It does not befit you to abandon Dharma."

"आप इक्ष्वाकु कुल में उत्पन्न हुए हैं और साक्षात् दूसरे धर्मराज के समान हैं। आप धैर्यवान, उत्तम व्रतधारी और श्रीमान हैं। आपको धर्म का त्याग करना शोभा नहीं देता।"
English Commentary
Vasistha does not scold Dasharatha; instead, he elevates him to remind him of his identity. Calling the King "Dharma incarnate," Vasistha uses positive reinforcement to pull Dasharatha out of his emotional paralysis. The argument is profound: the safety of the son relies not on the father's physical protection, but on the father's adherence to Truth. By breaking his word to save Rama, Dasharatha would actually be abandoning the very Dharma that protects his lineage.

वसिष्ठ दशरथ को डांटते नहीं, बल्कि उन्हें उनकी पहचान याद दिलाते हैं। वे राजा को 'साक्षात् धर्म' कहते हैं। मनोविज्ञान की दृष्टि से यह अद्भुत है—दशरथ को यह याद दिलाना कि वे कौन हैं, उन्हें अपने पुत्र-मोह से ऊपर उठने में मदद करता है। इक्ष्वाकु कुल की पहचान 'सत्य' है। वसिष्ठ कह रहे हैं कि राम की रक्षा पिता का कवच नहीं, बल्कि पिता का 'सत्य' करेगा। धर्म को छोड़ना ही राम के लिए सबसे बड़ा खतरा होगा।
