त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातो धर्मात्मा इति राघव ।
स्व धर्मम् प्रतिपद्यस्व न अधर्मम् वोढुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥१-२१-७॥
Triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāto dharmātmā iti rāghava |
Sva dharmam pratipadyasva na adharmam voḍhum arhasi ॥1-21-7॥
Translation
"O Raghava! You are renowned across the three worlds as a righteous soul (Dharmatma). Adhere to your own Dharma; it is not befitting for you to bear the burden of unrighteousness."

"हे राघव! आप तीनों लोकों में 'धर्मात्मा' के रूप में विख्यात हैं। अपने (क्षत्रिय/राज) धर्म का पालन कीजिये; अधर्म का भार उठाना आपके लिए उचित नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Sage Vasistha appeals to Dasharatha’s legacy and reputation. By addressing him as 'Raghava,' he invokes the lineage known for absolute integrity. Vasistha argues that for a King, breaking a promise is not just a mistake, but Adharma (sin/unrighteousness). He reminds Dasharatha that his fame as a 'righteous soul' spans three worlds, and backing out now would destroy that hard-earned spiritual standing. It is a call to duty over emotion.

वसिष्ठ जी यहाँ दशरथ की प्रतिष्ठा (Reputation) का वास्ता दे रहे हैं। वे उन्हें 'राघव' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, यह याद दिलाने के लिए कि उनके पूर्वज अपने वचनों के पक्के थे। वसिष्ठ समझाते हैं कि एक राजा के लिए वचन देकर मुकर जाना केवल व्यक्तिगत भूल नहीं, बल्कि 'अधर्म' है। यदि दशरथ ने वचन तोड़ा, तो उनकी तीनों लोकों में जो 'धर्मात्मा' की छवि है, वह धूमिल हो जाएगी। यह एक गुरु द्वारा शिष्य को उसकी नैतिक जिम्मेदारी का अहसास कराना है।
