स पुत्रम् मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय राजा दशरथः तदा ।
ददौ कुशिक पुत्राय सुप्रीतेन अंतरात्मना ॥ ॥१-२२-३॥
Sa putram mūrdhni upāghrāya rājā daśarathaḥ tadā । Dadau kuśika putrāya suprītena antarātmanā ॥ ॥1-22-3॥
Translation
Then, smelling his son on the head, King Dasharatha handed him over to the son of Kushika with a joyous soul.

तब राजा दशरथ ने पुत्र का मस्तक सूंघकर, अत्यंत प्रसन्न अंतरात्मा के साथ उन्हें कुशिकनंदन (विश्वामित्र) को सौंप दिया।
English Commentary
This verse captures a poignant moment of affection and surrender. "Smelling the head" (mūrdhni upāghrāya) is the classical Vedic gesture of parental love and blessing. The significant phrase here is Suprītena antarātmanā (with a very pleased inner soul). Dasharatha hands Rama over not out of obligation or fear, but with genuine happiness and internal peace, having realized the glory that awaits his son. The act of Dadau (he gave) signifies the formal transfer of responsibility from the father/King to the Guru.

प्राचीन भारत में मस्तक सूंघना (मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय) संतानों के प्रति स्नेह प्रकट करने का सर्वोच्च तरीका माना जाता था (आधुनिक चुंबन के समतुल्य)। यह एक अत्यंत भावुक क्षण है। राजा दशरथ, जिन्होंने पहले राम को देने से मना कर दिया था, अब उन्हें 'सुप्रीतेन अंतरात्मना' (अत्यंत प्रसन्न अंतरात्मा) से सौंप रहे हैं। 'अंतरात्मा' शब्द का प्रयोग यह बताता है कि अब उनके मन में कोई चोर या द्वंद्व नहीं है। यह 'कन्यादान' की भांति 'पुत्र-समर्पण' है, जहाँ पिता अपने सबसे कीमती रत्न को ऋषि की सेवा में दे रहा है।
