Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विश्वामित्रो ययौ अग्रे ततो रामो महायशाः ।
काक पक्ष धरो धन्वी तम् च सौमित्रिः अन्वगात् ॥ ॥१-२२-६॥
Viśvāmitro yayau agre tato rāmo mahāyaśāḥ । Kāka pakṣa dharo dhanvī tam ca saumitriḥ anvagāt ॥ ॥1-22-6॥
Translation
Vishwamitra walked in front, followed by the highly illustrious Rama, who wore side-locks of hair (Kakapaksha) and held a bow. Following him was the son of Sumitra (Lakshmana).

विश्वामित्र जी सबसे आगे चल रहे थे, उनके पीछे महायशस्वी राम चल रहे थे, जिन्होंने 'काकपक्ष' (बच्चों के जैसे कनपटी के बाल) रखे हुए थे और हाथ में धनुष धारण किया था। उनके पीछे सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण) चल रहे थे।
English Commentary
This verse paints a vivid picture of the procession. The hierarchy is strictly maintained with the Sage leading the way. The specific mention of Kakapaksha (side-locks of hair usually worn by young boys) is crucial—it emphasizes the tender youth of the princes. Yet, this innocence is juxtaposed with Dhanvi (holding a bow), highlighting that despite their young age, they have assumed the heavy responsibility of warrior-protectors.
