प्रभातायाम् तु शर्वर्याम् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
अभ्यभाषत काकुत्स्थौ शयानौ पर्ण संस्तरे ॥ ॥१-२३-१॥
Prabhātāyām tu śarvaryām viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ । Abhyabhāṣata kākutsthau śayānau parṇa saṃstare ॥ ॥1-23-1॥
Translation
When the night had passed and dawn broke, the great sage Vishwamitra spoke to the two descendants of Kakutstha, who were sleeping on the bed of leaves.

English Commentary
This verse sets the scene for one of the most famous moments in the Ramayana (the waking of Rama). It marks the break of dawn (Prabhatayam). The focus is on the contrast between the Mahamuni (great sage) who is awake and alert, and the young princes sleeping innocently on a bed of leaves (parna samstare). It is the quiet moment before the duties of the day begin.

यह अगले सर्ग (23वें) की शुरुआत है। एक नई सुबह, एक नई यात्रा। दृश्य बहुत शांत है—भोर का समय और पत्तों पर सोते हुए दो राजकुमार। विश्वामित्र उन्हें जगाने वाले हैं। 'पर्ण संस्तरे' (पत्तों का बिस्तर) फिर से उनकी तपस्वी जीवनशैली को रेखांकित करता है। यह श्लोक उस प्रसिद्ध "कौशल्या सुप्रजा राम" श्लोक की भूमिका (prelude) है जो इसके ठीक बाद आता है।
