Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कृत उद्वाहम् तु देवेशम् गच्छन्तम् स मरुद् गणम् ।
धर्षयामास दुर्मेधा हुम् कृतः च महात्मना ॥ ॥१-२३-११॥
Kṛta udvāham tu deveśam gacchantam sa marud gaṇam । Dharṣayāmāsa durmedhā hum kṛtaḥ ca mahātmanā ॥ ॥1-23-11॥
Translation
"That foolish-minded one (Kama) dared to assault the Lord of Gods (Shiva), who had married and was passing by with the Maruts. But he was roared at (with the sound 'Hum') by the Great Soul."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"उस दुर्बुद्धि (कामदेव) ने विवाह करने वाले (या विवाहित) देवेश्वर शिव पर, जो मरुद्गणों के साथ जा रहे थे, आक्रमण (प्रभाव डालने का प्रयास) किया। तब महात्मा शिव ने उसे 'हुं' (हुंकार) शब्द से ही नष्ट कर दिया।"
English Commentary
Kama is labeled Durmedha (foolish-minded) for underestimating Shiva's power. The verse describes Kama's audacity to "assault" (try to enchant) Shiva, who is described here as Kritodvaham (having undertaken marriage/or journeying after marriage) accompanied by Maruts. Shiva's retaliation was instant and minimal—a mere roar or sound of "Hum" (Hum kritah) was enough to counter the attack, foreshadowing Kama's destruction.

कामदेव को यहाँ "दुर्मेधा" (मूर्ख/बुरी बुद्धि वाला) कहा गया है क्योंकि उसने स्वयं महाकाल को विचलित करने का साहस किया। "धर्षयामास" का अर्थ है धृष्टता या आक्रमण करना (बाणों से मोहित करने का प्रयास)। शिवजी ने कोई हथियार नहीं उठाया, केवल "हुं" (हुंकार) भरी, जो उनके क्रोध और शक्ति का प्रतीक है। (कुछ व्याख्याओं के अनुसार यह घटना शिव-पार्वती विवाह के संदर्भ में है)।
