Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत्र गात्रम् हतम् तस्य निर्दग्धस्य महात्मनः ।
अशरीरः कृतः कामः क्रोधात् देव ईश्वरेण ह ॥ ॥१-२३-१३॥
tatra gātram hatam tasya nirdagdhasya mahātmanaḥ |
aśarīraḥ kṛtaḥ kāmaḥ krodhāt deva īśvareṇa ha ॥1-23-13॥
Translation
There, his body was destroyed as he was burnt by the Great Soul (Shiva). Out of anger, the Lord of Gods rendered Kama bodyless.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहाँ उस महात्मा (शिव) द्वारा जलाए जाने पर, देवेश्वर ने क्रोध में काम का शरीर नष्ट कर दिया और उसे 'अशरीरी' (बिना शरीर का) बना दिया।
English Commentary
Shiva is referred to here as 'Mahatma' (Great Soul) and 'Deveshwara' (Lord of Gods), indicating his supreme status. While Kama's physical body was burnt to ashes, his essence was not obliterated; he was rendered "bodyless" (Asharira). This contains a significant spiritual allegory: while the physical manifestation of desire can be destroyed, its subtle form persists. The verse marks the transition of Kama from a physical entity to an abstract force in the universe.

यहाँ शिव को 'महात्मा' और 'देवेश्वर' कहा गया है, जो उनकी सर्वोच्च स्थिति को दर्शाता है। कामदेव का शरीर जलकर भस्म हो गया, लेकिन उनका अस्तित्व समाप्त नहीं हुआ; वे केवल "अशरीरी" हो गए। यह एक महत्वपूर्ण आध्यात्मिक संकेत है कि 'काम' (इच्छा) का भौतिक रूप नष्ट किया जा सकता है, किन्तु सूक्ष्म रूप में वह तब भी विद्यमान रहता है। शिव ने क्रोधवश उसे भौतिक रूप से मुक्त कर दिया।
