Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तौ प्रयान्तौ महावीर्यौ दिव्यम् त्रिपथगाम् नदीम् ।
ददृशा ते ततः तत्र सरय्वाः संगमे शुभे ॥ ॥१-२३-५॥
Tau prayantau mahāvīryau divyam tripathagām nadīm । Dadṛśā te tataḥ tatra sarayvāḥ saṃgame śubhe ॥ ॥1-23-5॥
Translation
Proceeding further, those two mighty warriors saw the divine river flowing in three paths (the Ganga) at its auspicious confluence with the Sarayu.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आगे बढ़ते हुए उन दोनों महावीरों ने सरयू नदी के शुभ संगम पर, तीन पथों में गमन करने वाली दिव्य नदी (गंगा) को देखा।
English Commentary
This verse marks a geographical milestone in their journey. They reach the confluence (Sangam) where the river Sarayu merges into the Ganga. The Ganga is referred to as Tripathagam (Coursing through three paths) because, in cosmology, she flows through Heaven (Mandakini), Earth (Ganga), and the Underworld (Bhogavati). Seeing this holy confluence is considered a highly auspicious omen.

यह श्लोक भौगोलिक स्थिति को स्पष्ट करता है। राम और लक्ष्मण अयोध्या (सरयू तट) से चलकर वहां पहुंचे हैं जहां सरयू नदी गंगा जी में मिलती है। गंगा को "त्रिपथगा" (तीन रास्तों वाली) कहा गया है क्योंकि वह स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल तीनों लोकों में बहती है। नदियों का संगम भारतीय संस्कृति में अत्यंत पवित्र ("शुभे") माना जाता है।
