Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कस्य अयम् आश्रमः पुण्यः को नु अस्मिन् वसते पुमान् ।
भगवन् श्रोतुम् इच्छावः परम् कौतूहलम् हि नौ ॥ ॥१-२३-८॥
Kasya ayam āśramaḥ puṇyaḥ ko nu asmin vasate pumān । Bhagavan śrotum icchāvaḥ param kautūhalam hi nau ॥ ॥1-23-8॥
Translation
"O Lord! Whose holy hermitage is this? Which person resides here? We desire to hear this, for indeed, we have great curiosity."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे भगवन्! यह पवित्र आश्रम किसका है? यहाँ कौन महापुरुष निवास करते हैं? हम यह सुनना चाहते हैं, क्योंकि हमें बहुत अधिक कौतूहल (जिज्ञासा) हो रहा है।"
English Commentary
This is the standard format of inquiry in the Upanishadic and Epic tradition. The student respectfully expresses curiosity (Kautuhalam) and requests the teacher to expound. By asking "Whose ashram is this?", Rama invites Vishwamitra to narrate the local legend, which turns out to be the significant story of Kamadeva (the God of Love) and Lord Shiva.

राम की विनम्रता देखिए, वे "श्रोतुम् इच्छावः" (हम सुनना चाहते हैं) कहते हैं। "भगवन्" शब्द का प्रयोग गुरु के प्रति सर्वोच्च सम्मान दर्शाता है। जिज्ञासा (Curiosity) ज्ञान का द्वार है। वे जानना चाहते हैं कि इस तपस्थली का इतिहास क्या है और वर्तमान में यहाँ कौन रहता है।
