Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अविप्रहतम् ऐक्ष्वाकः पप्रच्छ मुनि पुंगवम् ।
अहो वनम् इदम् दुर्गम् झिल्लिका गण संयुतम् ॥ ॥१-२४-१३॥
Aviprahatam aikṣvākaḥ papraccha muni puṅgavam । Aho vanam idam durgam jhillikā gaṇa saṃyutam ॥ ॥1-24-13॥
Translation
The scion of Ikshvaku (Rama) asked the preeminent sage: "Oh! This forest is indeed difficult to traverse and is filled with swarms of crickets."

इक्ष्वाकु वंश के राम ने मुनि श्रेष्ठ (विश्वामित्र) से पूछा—"अहो! यह वन तो बहुत दुर्गम है और झींगुरों (की आवाज़) से भरा हुआ है।"
English Commentary
Rama's curiosity drives the narrative forward. Being raised in royal comfort, this rugged, insect-infested wilderness stands in stark contrast to Ayodhya. The specific mention of jhillika (crickets) adds an auditory layer to the description, evoking the eerie, incessant buzzing typical of deep, dangerous jungles. Rama addresses Vishvamitra as Muni pungavam (best among sages), seeking knowledge about this hostile environment before traversing it further.

राम की जिज्ञासा यहाँ स्पष्ट होती है। राजभवन में पले-बढ़े राजकुमार के लिए ऐसा भयानक और दुर्गम वन कौतूहल का विषय है। 'झिल्लिका' (झींगुर) का उल्लेख वन की सन्नाटे भरी डरावनी आवाज़ को दर्शाता है। यह वर्णन वन की निर्जनता और वहां की भयावहता को श्रवण-बिंब (auditory imagery) के माध्यम से प्रस्तुत करता है। राम निडर हैं, लेकिन वे सतर्क हैं और अपने गुरु से इस स्थान का इतिहास जानना चाहते हैं।
