संकीर्णम् बदरीभिः च किम् नु एतत् दारुणम् वनम् ।
तम् उवाच महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥ ॥१-२४-१६॥
Saṃkīrṇam badarībhiḥ ca kim nu etat dāruṇam vanam । Tam uvāca mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ॥ ॥1-24-16॥
Translation
"It is also crowded with Badari (Jujube) trees. What indeed is this terrible forest?" To him, the great sage Vishvamitra, possessing great radiance, replied.

"यह बेर के वृक्षों से भी भरा हुआ है। यह भयानक वन आखिर क्या है (इसका क्या रहस्य है)" तब महातेजस्वी महामुनि विश्वामित्र ने उनसे कहा।
English Commentary
Rama concludes his observation with a direct question regarding the identity and history of this dark forest. The verse juxtaposes the darunam vanam (terrible forest) with Vishvamitra who is maha-teja (of great radiance). This implies that the sage's wisdom will illuminate the mystery of this dark place. It marks the transition from description to storytelling, as Vishvamitra prepares to reveal the tragic history of the land.

राम का प्रश्न यहाँ पूर्ण होता है। वे जानना चाहते हैं कि यह स्थान, जो उपजाऊ और संपन्न हो सकता था, इतना डरावना क्यों है। 'महातेजा' विशेषण विश्वामित्र के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है, जो अँधेरे वन और ऋषि के ज्ञान के प्रकाश के बीच विरोधाभास (contrast) दिखाता है। विश्वामित्र अब एक इतिहासकार की भूमिका निभाएंगे और उस स्थान के अतीत पर प्रकाश डालेंगे।
