बलम् नाग सहस्रस्य धारयन्ती तदा हि आभूत् ।
ताटका नाम भद्रम् ते भार्या सुन्दस्य धीमतः ॥ ॥१-२४-२६॥
Balam nāga sahasrasya dhārayantī tadā hi ābhūt । Tāṭakā nāma bhadram te bhāryā sundasya dhīmataḥ ॥ ॥1-24-26॥
Translation
Possessing the strength of a thousand elephants, she was known by the name Tataka. She was the wife of the wise Sunda. May good betide you!

उसमें हज़ार हाथियों का बल था। उसका नाम ताड़का था। वह बुद्धिमान सुन्द की पत्नी थी। (हे राम) तुम्हारा कल्याण हो!
English Commentary
Here, the antagonist is named: Tataka. Her strength is quantified as equal to a thousand elephants, emphasizing the sheer physical threat she poses. She is identified as the wife of Sunda. A touching detail in this verse is the interjection Bhadram te ("May you be blessed" or "Safe betide you"). Vishvamitra, sensing the terrifying nature of the description he is providing to the young prince, instinctively inserts a blessing of protection. It highlights the dual role of Vishvamitra as a narrator of harsh truths and a protective guardian.

विश्वामित्र ताड़का का परिचय देते हैं। 'नाग सहस्रस्य बलम्' (हजार हाथियों का बल) उसकी शारीरिक शक्ति को दर्शाता है। वह 'सुन्द' नामक दैत्य की पत्नी थी। बीच में विश्वामित्र 'भद्रम् ते' (तुम्हारा कल्याण हो) कहते हैं। यह वाल्मीकि रामायण की एक सुंदर शैली है—जब भी ऋषि कोई भयानक या डरावनी बात बताते हैं, तो वे बीच में अपने शिष्य को आशीर्वाद देते हैं ताकि उस भय का प्रभाव शिष्य पर न पड़े और वह सुरक्षित महसूस करे। यह गुरु के वात्सल्य को दर्शाता है।
