राज्य भार नियुक्तानाम् एष धर्मः सनातनः ।
अधर्म्याम् जहि काकुत्स्थ धर्मो हि अस्याम् न विद्यते ॥ ॥१-२५-१९॥
rājya bhāra niyuktānām eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ । adharmyām jahi kākutstha dharmo hi asyām na vidyate ॥ ॥1-25-19॥
Translation
This is the eternal duty (Sanatana Dharma) of those appointed to bear the burden of the kingdom. O Kakutstha! Slay this unrighteous female, for there is no righteousness in her.

राज्य का भार उठाने के लिए नियुक्त पुरुषों का यही सनातन धर्म है। हे काकुत्स्थ! इस अधर्मी ताड़का का वध करो, क्योंकि इसमें लेशमात्र भी धर्म नहीं है।
English Commentary
The sage emphasizes that leadership is a burden (bhara) that comes with specific, eternal laws. By addressing Rama as 'Kakutstha,' Viswamitra invokes the lineage of great warrior-kings, reminding Rama that his ancestors did not shy away from difficult duties. The core argument here is that rights and protections (like the immunity of women from violence) apply to those who abide by Dharma. Tataka, being completely devoid of Dharma (adharmyam), has forfeited her right to protection. To kill her is not a sin, but a restoration of order.

ऋषि विश्वामित्र 'सनातन धर्म' की व्याख्या यहाँ राजा के कर्तव्य के संदर्भ में कर रहे हैं। वे राम को 'काकुत्स्थ' (ककुत्स्थ कुल के वंशज) कहकर उनके क्षत्रिय रक्त का आह्वान करते हैं। तर्क यह है कि ताड़का केवल एक स्त्री नहीं, बल्कि साक्षात् 'अधर्म' है। जो प्राणी धर्म और मर्यादा का नाश करने पर तुला हो, उसका लिंग (gender) उसके प्राणों की रक्षा का आधार नहीं बन सकता। एक राजा के लिए अधर्म का नाश करना ही सबसे बड़ी पूजा है, और भावुकता को कर्तव्य के आड़े नहीं आना चाहिए।
