अनुशिष्टो अस्मि अयोध्यायाम् गुरु मध्ये महात्मना ।
पित्रा दशरथेन अहम् न अवज्ञेयम् च तद् वचः ॥ ॥१-२६-३॥
anuśiṣṭo asmi ayodhyāyām guru madhye mahātmanā । pitrā daśarathena aham na avajñeyam ca tad vacaḥ ॥ ॥1-26-3॥
Translation
"I was instructed in Ayodhya, in the midst of elders, by my high-souled father Dasharatha. That word of his cannot be ignored."

"अयोध्या में गुरुजनों के मध्य महात्मा पिता दशरथ ने मुझे जो अनुशासन (आदेश) दिया था, उस वचन की अवहेलना मैं नहीं कर सकता।"
English Commentary
Rama reinforces the binding nature of his father's command by recalling the context: it was given in Ayodhya amidst the elders and gurus. A command given in a royal court or assembly holds the weight of a decree. Rama emphasizes that ignoring such a directive (avajñeyam) is impossible for him. This reflects the sanctity of a promise in the Raghu lineage. Rama views his current action as a direct fulfillment of the pledge he made to his father before embarking on this journey.

राम पिछले श्लोक की बात को ही विस्तार दे रहे हैं। वह आदेश कोई गुप्त मंत्रणा नहीं थी, बल्कि 'गुरु मध्य' (बड़ों और गुरुओं के बीच) दी गई थी। सार्वजनिक रूप से स्वीकार की गई आज्ञा का पालन करना रघुकुल की मर्यादा है—रघुकुल रीत सदा चली आई, प्राण जाई पर वचन न जाई। राम यह स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि ताड़का वध केवल विश्वामित्र की वर्तमान इच्छा नहीं, बल्कि दशरथ के पूर्व-निर्णय का ही क्रियान्वयन है।
