Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मूर्ध्नि रामम् उपाघ्राय इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ।
इह अद्य रजनीम् राम वसाम शुभ दर्शन ॥ ॥१-२६-३३॥
mūrdhni rāmam upāghrāya idam vacanam abravīt । iha adya rajanīm rāma vasāma śubha darśana ॥ ॥1-26-33॥
Translation
Smelling the crown of Rama’s head (a gesture of affection), he spoke these words: "O handsome Rama, we shall stay here tonight."

उन्होंने श्रीराम का मस्तक सूंघकर यह वचन कहा—"हे शुभ दर्शन राम! आज की रात हम यहीं निवास करेंगे।"
English Commentary
This is a touching moment of intimacy. Murdhni upaghraya (smelling the head) is the traditional Vedic equivalent of a kiss on the forehead, reserved for children and beloved disciples. It signifies deep parental affection and protection. Vishvamitra, the stern ascetic, melts into tenderness towards Rama. Addressing Rama as Shubha darshana (one whose sight is auspicious/pleasing) contrasts with the earlier description of the terrifying Tadaka. It implies that Rama's presence has purified the visuals of the forest. The decision to stay the night there (where the demon just lived) proves the fear is truly gone.

वैदिक संस्कृति में, 'मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय' (सिर सूंघना) पुत्र या शिष्य के प्रति अत्यधिक स्नेह और आशीर्वाद प्रकट करने की सबसे प्राचीन मुद्रा है। यह गले लगाने से भी गहरा, आत्मिक संबंध दर्शाता है। विश्वामित्र, जो सामान्यतः क्रोधी और कठोर तपस्वी माने जाते हैं, यहाँ एक कोमल पिता की भूमिका में हैं। वे राम को 'शुभ दर्शन' कहते हैं—जिसका अर्थ है, जिसे देखना ही मंगलकारी हो। ताड़का के वध के बाद राम का मुख मंडल और भी अधिक तेजस्वी हो गया है। उस भयावह वन में अब वे निर्भय होकर विश्राम कर सकते हैं, यह गुरु का आश्वासन है।
