वधार्थम् राक्षसाम् यानि ददामि एतानि सर्वशः ।
वैद्याधरम् महा अस्त्रम् च नन्दनम् नाम नामतः ॥१-२७-१३॥
vadhārtham rākṣasām yāni dadāmi etāni sarvaśaḥ |
vaidyādharam mahā astram ca nandanam nāma nāmataḥ ॥1-27-13॥
Translation
I give all these to you entirely for the purpose of slaying Rakshasas. And [I give] the great missile of the Vidyadharas named Nandana.

राक्षसों के वध के लिए मैं ये सब अस्त्र तुम्हें पूर्ण रूप से दे रहा हूँ। और मैं 'नन्दन' नामक महान 'वैद्याधर' अस्त्र भी देता हूँ।
English Commentary
Vishwamitra explicitly states the mission profile: these weapons are "vadhārtham rākṣasām" (for the destruction of demons). This removes any ambiguity about why a young prince is being armed with weapons of mass destruction; it is a preemptive strike against the rising threat of Ravana's forces. He specifically gifts the Vaidyadhara Astra named Nandana (The Delighter). Vidyadharas are semi-divine beings possessing great magical knowledge. A weapon of their class would likely counter magical illusions or aerial attacks. The name Nandana suggests that while it destroys enemies, it brings joy to the wielder or the righteous, or perhaps it operates with a swift grace that is aesthetically pleasing even in its lethality. This equips Rama to fight on the metaphysical plane where Rakshasas operate.
