Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मादनम् चैव दुर्धर्षम् कन्दर्प दयितम् तथा ।
गान्धर्वम् अस्त्रम् दयितम् मानवम् नाम नामतः ॥१-२७-१६॥
mādanam caiva durdharṣam kandarpa dayitam tathā |
gāndharvam astram dayitam mānavam nāma nāmataḥ ॥1-27-16॥
Translation
And [I give] the Mādana missile, difficult to resist, beloved of Kandarpa (Cupid). And [I give] the beloved Gandharva missile known by the name 'Manava'.
हिंदी अनुवाद
और मैं कामदेव (कन्दर्प) का प्रिय, दुर्धर्ष (जिसे हराना कठिन हो) 'मादन' अस्त्र देता हूँ। तथा गन्धर्वों का प्रिय 'मानव' नामक अस्त्र भी देता हूँ।
English Commentary
The arsenal expands to include weapons of desire and enchantment. The Madana Astra (Intoxicater) is beloved of Kandarpa (The God of Love). Described as "durdharṣam" (assault-proof/invincible), it implies that the power of desire or intoxication is hard to resist even for disciplined warriors. It distracts enemies by overwhelming their senses. The second weapon is a Gandharva missile named Manava. While Manava usually refers to the weapon of Manu (the first man/lawgiver), linking it here with Gandharvas might suggest a specific variant used by celestial musicians, or perhaps it signifies a weapon that targets the 'humanness' or conscience of the enemy. These weapons attack the mind and senses, complementing the physical destruction of the earlier missiles.
