Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तामसम् नरशार्दूल सौमनम् च महाबलम् ।
संवर्तम् चैव दुर्धर्षम् मौसलम् च नृपात्मज ॥१-२७-१८॥
tāmasam naraśārdūla saumanam ca mahābalam |
samvartam caiva durdharṣam mausalam ca nṛpātmaja ॥1-27-18॥
Translation
O Tiger among men, O Prince! [I give you] the Tamasa missile, the mighty Saumana missile, the invincible Samvarta missile, and the Mausala missile.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे नरशार्दूल! हे राजकुमार! मैं तुम्हें 'तामस' अस्त्र, महाबली 'सौमन' अस्त्र, दुर्धर्ष 'संवर्त' अस्त्र और 'मौसल' अस्त्र देता हूँ।
English Commentary
The Sage bestows weapons of cosmic magnitude. The Tamasa Astra creates absolute darkness, blinding enemies and plunging them into ignorance or void. The Saumana Astra (related to the mind or benevolence), described as "Mahabalam" (greatly powerful), likely acts as a counter-force, restoring clarity or crushing enemies with mental force. The Samvarta Astra is associated with the fire and clouds of cosmic dissolution (Pralaya); receiving this means Rama holds the power of the apocalypse in his quiver. The Mausala Astra is mentioned again (or a variant thereof), reinforcing the availability of crushing, blunt-force destruction. These weapons—darkness, dissolution, and crushing power—are tools of last resort, entrusting Rama with the capacity to unmake creation if necessary to protect Dharma.
