स त्वम् सुर हितार्थाय माया योगम् उपाश्रितः ।
वामनत्वम् गतो विष्णो कुरु कल्याणम् उत्तमम् ॥१-२९-९॥
sa tvam sura hitārthāya māyā yogam upāśritaḥ । vāmanatvam gato viṣṇo kuru kalyāṇam uttamam ॥ ॥1-29-9॥
Translation
"Therefore, O Vishnu, for the welfare of the gods, resorting to your Maya-Yoga (divine illusion/power), assume the form of a Dwarf (Vamana) and bring about the highest good."

"इसलिए हे विष्णु! आप देवताओं के हित के लिए अपनी माया (योगमाया) का आश्रय लेकर, वामन (बौने) रूप में जाकर हम सबका परम कल्याण कीजिये।"
English Commentary
The strategy is finalized. The gods request Vishnu to use Māyā Yogam—not deceit, but the divine power to change form and shroud his infinite nature. They specifically ask him to become Vāmanatvam (dwarf-ness). This is the tactical solution to Bali's generosity: a small requester asking for a small gift (three paces of land) which eventually encompasses the universe. The goal is kalyāṇam uttamam (supreme welfare) of the cosmos, restoring the balance disturbed by Bali's dominance.

यह वामन अवतार का 'Mission Statement' है। देवता विष्णु को 'माया योगम्' का प्रयोग करने को कहते हैं—अर्थात अपनी दिव्य शक्ति से रूप बदलना। वे विशाल स्वरूप के बजाय 'वामनत्वम्' (बौनापन/लघु रूप) धारण करने की प्रार्थना करते हैं। उद्देश्य है—'स्रु हितार्थाय' (देवताओं की भलाई) और 'कल्याणम् उत्तमम्' (जगत का परम कल्याण)। यहाँ यह स्पष्ट होता है कि भगवान का छोटा रूप भी बड़े-बड़े कार्य कर सकता है।
