करिष्यामि न संदेहो न उत्सहे हन्तुम् ईदृशान् ।
इति उक्त्वा वचनम् रामः चापे संधाय वेगवान् ॥ ॥१-३०-१६॥
Kariṣyāmi na sandeho na utsahe hantum īdṛśān । Iti uktvā vacanam rāmaḥ cāpe sandhāya vegavān ॥ ॥1-30-16॥
Translation
"I will undoubtedly do this; yet I do not wish to kill such as these." Saying this, the swift Rama fixed the weapon upon his bow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं (इनका निवारण) करूँगा, इसमें संदेह नहीं है; परन्तु ऐसे (नीच) प्राणियों को मारने का मेरा उत्साह नहीं है।" ऐसा वचन कहकर वेगवान राम ने धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाया।
English Commentary
This verse contains a nuanced expression of Rama's intent: na utsahe hantum (I do not wish/enthuse to kill). This indicates that while he is resolved to stop them (kariṣyāmi na sandeho), he views immediate slaughter as either unnecessary or beneath him for these specific foes, or specifically intends to drive Maricha away rather than kill him instantly. This foreshadows Maricha's survival, which is essential for the later Aranya Kanda plot. Despite this hesitation to kill, there is no hesitation in action. Rama is described as vegavān (possessing speed/impetus) as he nocks the arrow, showing that his moral deliberation does not impede his martial duty.
