Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य लक्ष्मण शीतेषुम् मानवम् मनु संहितम् ।
मोहयित्वा नयति एनम् न च प्राणैर् व्ययुज्यत ॥ ॥१-३०-२०॥
Paśya lakṣmaṇa śīteṣum mānavam manu saṃhitam । Mohayitvā nayati enam na ca prāṇair vyayujyata ॥ ॥1-30-20॥
Translation
"Behold, O Lakshmana, this cold-arrow of Manu, presided over by Manu himself. It has stupefied him and carried him away, yet he has not been bereft of his life."

"हे लक्ष्मण! मनु द्वारा रचित इस 'शीतेषु' (मानवास्त्र) को देखो। इसने उसे (मारीच को) केवल मोहित (बेहोश) करके दूर कर दिया है, किन्तु उसके प्राण नहीं लिए।"
English Commentary
Rama explicitly defines the function of the weapon he utilized. The phrase Manu saṃhitam suggests that the weapon operates according to the code or intention of Manu—the progenitor of humanity who establishes law. Therefore, the weapon acts as a tool of correction and expulsion rather than absolute termination. Rama points out the nuance: the demon is deluded (mohayitvā) and transported (nayati), but his life force remains intact (na ca prāṇair vyayujyata). This teaches a critical lesson in warfare: the proportional use of force. Rama chose a non-lethal (though severely incapacitating) method for Maricha, perhaps sensing the demon's future role or simply adhering to a specific strategic intent to clear the field without engaging in prolonged combat with one individual while others attacked.

यह श्लोक श्रीराम की दया और अस्त्र-विज्ञान (Weaponry Science) के ज्ञान का प्रमाण है। श्रीराम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि मानवास्त्र का धर्म 'मनु संहिता' के अनुसार है—यह दंड देता है, सुधारता है, परन्तु अकारण वध नहीं करता यदि संकल्प वध का न हो। श्रीराम लक्ष्मण को समझा रहे हैं कि शत्रु का दमन करने के विभिन्न स्तर होते हैं। मारीच को केवल 'मोहयित्वा' (मूर्च्छित करके) और 'नयति' (दूर ले जाकर) छोड़ दिया गया। यह दर्शाता है कि क्षत्रिय का धर्म केवल हत्या करना नहीं, बल्कि दुष्टों को निष्क्रिय करना है। श्रीराम का यह कथन सिद्ध करता है कि वे आवेश में बाण नहीं चलाते, बल्कि पूर्ण विवेक और नियंत्रण के साथ संधान करते हैं।
