Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अद्य प्रभृति षट् रात्रम् रक्षतम् राघवौ युवाम् ।
दीक्षाम् गतो हि येष मुनिर् मौनित्वम् च गमिष्यति ॥ ॥१-३०-४॥
Adya prabhṛti ṣaṭ rātram rakṣatam rāghavau yuvām । Dīkṣām gato hi yeṣa munir maunitvam ca gamiṣyati ॥ ॥1-30-4॥
Translation
(The sages replied): "O Scions of Raghu, from today onwards for six nights, you must protect the sacrifice. The Sage has entered into consecration and will now observe a vow of silence."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(अन्य मुनियों ने उत्तर दिया): "हे राघवौ! आज से लेकर छह रातों तक तुम दोनों को (सावधानी से) रक्षा करनी होगी। क्योंकि मुनि (विश्वामित्र) ने दीक्षा ग्रहण कर ली है और अब वे मौन व्रत का पालन करेंगे।"
English Commentary
Since Vishvamitra has initiated the vow of silence (Maunitvam), the other attending sages answer the princes' tactical question. The duration of the mission is set: six nights. This timeframe provides a specific endurance target for the warriors. The silence of the Guru means the "command and control" is now effectively decentralized; Rama must act on his own judgment. This shift empowers Rama, forcing him to transition from a student following orders to a guardian executing a mandate.

चूँकि विश्वामित्र मौन हो चुके हैं, इसलिए अन्य मुनि राम के प्रश्न का उत्तर दे रहे हैं। कार्य की अवधि तय हो गई—'षट् रात्रम्' (छह रातें)। 'मौनित्वम्' (मौन व्रत) का अर्थ है कि विश्वामित्र अब निर्देश नहीं देंगे; राम को स्व-विवेक से निर्णय लेने होंगे। यह राम के लिए 'फील्ड टेस्ट' है। बिना गुरु के निर्देश के, स्वतंत्र रूप से संकट का सामना करना ही उनकी वास्तविक परीक्षा है। 'राघवौ' संबोधन उन्हें उनके कुल (रघुवंश) की याद दिलाता है, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पालन के लिए प्रसिद्ध था।
