धनुषस्य तस्य वीर्यम् हि जिज्ञासन्तो महीक्षितः ।
न शेकुर् आरोपयितुम् राजपुत्रा महाबलाः ॥ ॥१-३१-१०॥
Dhanuṣasya tasya vīryam hi jijñāsanto mahīkṣitaḥ । Na śekur āropayitum rājaputrā mahābalāḥ ॥ ॥1-31-10॥
Translation
"Wishing to know the power of that bow, many earth-ruling kings and mighty princes tried, but they were unable to string it."

"उस धनुष के वीर्य (शक्ति) को जानने की इच्छा रखने वाले अनेक महाबलशाली राजाओं और राजपुत्रों ने प्रयास किया, किन्तु वे उस पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने में समर्थ नहीं हो सके।"
English Commentary
The text confirms that the bow has been a subject of trial for many. Mahīkṣitaḥ (kings/rulers of the earth) and mighty princes have tested their strength against it out of curiosity (jijñāsanto) regarding its reputation. The failure of these "mighty" (mahābalāḥ) warriors serves to isolate Rama's upcoming feat as singular. If everyone failed, the one who succeeds is automatically proven to be superior to all kings of the earth.

यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि अतीत में कई प्रयास हो चुके हैं। 'महीक्षितः' (पृथ्वी के शासक/राजा) और 'महाबलाः' (महाबली) राजकुमार आए, पर सब विफल रहे। 'जिज्ञासन्तो' (जानने की इच्छा से) - कई लोग केवल परीक्षा लेने आए थे। यह सीता के स्वयंवर की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार कर रहा है (यद्यपि अभी स्वयंवर का स्पष्ट उल्लेख नहीं है, केवल धनुष की महिमा गाई जा रही है)। यह बताता है कि यह धनुष कई वीरों के अहंकार को तोड़ चुका है।
