English Commentary
Practicality and compassion merge in this verse. The sages, realizing that the wildlife cannot permanently migrate with them, gently persuade the animals and birds to return (Nivartayāmāsa) to their habitat. This separation emphasizes the finality of leaving the ashram. The narrative then compresses time; they travel a long distance (dūram adhvānam) until the sun begins to "hang low" (lambamāne divākare), a poetic description of late afternoon or approaching sunset. This marks the end of the first leg of their journey, transitioning the setting from the dynamic movement of the caravan to the stillness required for the evening rites.
