Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अन्तः चरसि भूतानाम् सर्वेषाम् त्वम् सुर सत्तम ।
प्रभावज्ञाः च ते सर्वाः किम् अर्थम् अवमन्यसे ॥१-३२-१९॥
Antaḥ carasi bhūtānām sarveṣām tvam sura sattama |
Prabhāvajñāḥ ca te sarvāḥ kim artham avamanyase ॥1-32-19॥
Translation
O best of Devas, you move inside all living beings. We are all aware of your immense power; for what reason do you insult us (by proposing this indignity)?

हे सुरश्रेष्ठ! आप सभी प्राणियों के भीतर विचरण करते हैं (प्राण रूप में)। हम सभी आपके प्रभाव और शक्ति को भली-भांति जानती हैं, फिर भी आप (धर्म विरुद्ध प्रस्ताव रखकर) हमारा अपमान क्यों कर रहे हैं?
English Commentary
Here, the maidens acknowledge Vayu's metaphysical status as the indwelling life force (prāṇa) within all beings. By stating antaḥ carasi, they imply, "You know our hearts, our purity, and our resolve; why then do you test us?" This is a profound theological challenge. They question why a deity, aware of their steadfast adherence to Dharma, would tempt them towards unrighteousness. The phrase kim artham avamanyase (why do you insult us) suggests that soliciting them to bypass their father's authority is an insult to their upbringing and virtue. It highlights a sophisticated understanding where divine power is expected to align with moral guardianship, not self-serving indulgence.

इस श्लोक में कन्याएँ वायुदेव के 'सर्वान्तर्यामी' स्वरूप को स्वीकार करती हैं। 'अन्तः चरसि' कहकर वे यह संकेत देती हैं कि आप तो हमारे मन की पवित्रता और संकल्प को जानते हैं, फिर भी ऐसा अधार्मिक प्रस्ताव क्यों? यह एक अत्यंत तार्किक और दार्शनिक प्रश्न है। यदि ईश्वर या देवता अंतर्यामी हैं, तो उन्हें भक्त या प्राणी की धर्म-निष्ठा का सम्मान करना चाहिए। 'किम् अर्थम् अवमन्यसे'—यहाँ 'अवमानना' का अर्थ केवल अपमान नहीं, बल्कि उन्हें धर्मच्युत करने का प्रयास है। विदुषी कन्याएँ यह स्पष्ट करती हैं कि शक्ति का अर्थ मनमानी करना नहीं है। वे वायु को स्मरण दिलाती हैं कि सुरश्रेष्ठ होने के नाते उन्हें रक्षक होना चाहिए, न कि भक्षक या प्रलोभक।
