Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किम् इदम् कथ्यताम् पुत्र्यः को धर्मम् अवमन्यते ।
कुब्जाः केन कृताः सर्वाः चेष्टन्त्यो न अभिभाषथ ।
एवम् राजा विनिःश्वस्य समाधिम् संदधे ततः ॥१-३२-२६॥
Kim idam kathyatām putryaḥ ko dharmam avamanyate |
Kubjāḥ kena kṛtāḥ sarvāḥ ceṣṭantyo na abhibhāṣatha |
Evam rājā viniḥśvasya samādhim saṃdadhe tataḥ ॥1-32-26॥
Translation
"What is this? Tell me, daughters. Who is disregarding Dharma? By whom have you all been made hunchbacked? You are gesturing but not speaking." Saying this, the King sighed heavily and then composed himself in deep thought.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"पुत्रियों! यह क्या है? बताओ। कौन धर्म का अपमान कर रहा है? तुम सबको कुबड़ा किसने बना दिया? तुम सब छटपटा रही हो (चेष्टा कर रही हो) किन्तु बोल नहीं रही हो?" ऐसा कहकर राजा ने गहरी साँस ली और फिर विचारमग्न (समाधिस्थ) हो गए।
English Commentary
The King's immediate concern is not just the injury but the violation of law: ko dharmam avamanyate (Who disregards Dharma?). He recognizes this deformation as an assault on the cosmic moral order. The daughters' inability to speak immediately suggests severe trauma. Crucially, the verse ends with the King entering samādhi (deep contemplation/composure) after a heavy sigh. Instead of an immediate outburst of rage, he seeks intuitive clarity. This portrays Kushanabha as a Rajarshi (sage-king) who relies on spiritual composure to understand the truth behind appearances before taking action. It acts as a transition from the chaos of the event to the clarity of the explanation.
