Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
लक्ष्म्या समुदितो ब्राह्म्या ब्रह्म भूतो महातपाः ।
ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तम् पुत्रम् इच्छामि धार्मिकम् ॥ ॥१-३३-१६॥
Lakṣmyā samudito brāhmyā brahma bhūto mahātapāḥ |
Brāhmeṇa tapasā yuktam putram icchāmi dhārmikam ॥1-33-16॥
Translation
[She said:] You are endowed with the splendor of Brahma, you have become one with Brahma, and possess great ascetic merit. I desire a righteous son endowed with the power of Brahma-penance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
[उसने कहा] आप ब्राह्मी लक्ष्मी (ब्रह्म तेज) से संपन्न, साक्षात् ब्रह्म रूप और महातपस्वी हैं। मैं (आपसे) ब्राह्मी तपस्या से युक्त एक धार्मिक पुत्र चाहती हूँ।
English Commentary
Somada frames her request with profound praise, acknowledging the Sage's spiritual status as Brahma bhūta (one with the Ultimate Reality). She asks for a son, but specifically one who inherits the Sage's Brahma-tapas (spiritual energy) and is dhārmikam (righteous). This request reveals her values; she desires progeny that carries the spiritual DNA of the sage rather than mere physical beauty or worldly power. It sets the foundation for the birth of Brahmadatta, who is destined to be a sage-king. Her request is consistent with the Vedic desire for supraja (good progeny) that upholds Dharma.

सोमदा अपनी मांग रखती है। वह धन या स्वर्ग नहीं मांगती, बल्कि एक 'धार्मिक पुत्र' मांगती है। वह ऋषि की प्रशंसा करते हुए कहती है कि आप 'ब्रह्मभूत' (ब्रह्म में लीन) हैं। उसकी मांग बहुत विशिष्ट है—उसे साधारण पुत्र नहीं चाहिए, बल्कि ऐसा पुत्र चाहिए जो 'ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तम्' (ऋषि के तप के गुणों से युक्त) हो। यह दर्शाता है कि सोमदा ऋषि के शारीरिक रूप पर नहीं, बल्कि उनके आत्मिक तेज पर मोहित थी। वह चाहती थी कि ऋषि का ज्ञान और तप उसके पुत्र के रूप में अवतरित हो। यह एक उच्च कोटि की माता की सोच है जो अपनी संतान में श्रेष्ठ संस्कार चाहती है।
