यथा क्रमम् ततः पाणिम् जग्राह रघुनंदन ।
ब्रह्मदत्तो महीपालः तासाम् देवपतिर् यथा ॥१-३३-२२॥
yathā kramam tataḥ pāṇim jagrāha raghunaṃdana |
brahmadatto mahīpālaḥ tāsām devapatir yathā ॥1-33-22॥
Translation
O descendant of Raghu! Thereafter, King Brahmadatta took their hands in marriage sequentially, one after another, just as the Lord of Celestials (Indra) accepts the hands of goddesses.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे रघुनन्दन! तदनंतर राजा ब्रह्मदत्त ने क्रमानुसार उन (सौ) कन्याओं का पाणिग्रहण उसी प्रकार किया, जैसे देवराज इन्द्र (शची आदि का) पाणिग्रहण करते हैं।
English Commentary
The phrase yathā kramam (in due sequence) highlights the ritualistic precision observed by King Brahmadatta. Despite the unusual circumstance of marrying one hundred sisters simultaneously, the sanctity of the Pāṇigrahaṇa (clasping of the hand) was maintained for each bride individually. The simile comparing Brahmadatta to Devapati (Indra) elevates the status of the king, suggesting that he possessed a celestial radiance matching the daughters of Kushanabha. This verse serves as a bridge between the physical act of marriage and the impending miraculous transformation described in the subsequent verses, grounding the supernatural event in solemn ritual.

यहाँ 'यथा क्रमम्' शब्द का प्रयोग विवाह संस्कार की मर्यादा और अनुशासन को दर्शाता है। यद्यपि कन्याओं की संख्या सौ थी, तथापि राजा ब्रह्मदत्त ने उतावली न करते हुए विधि-विधान के साथ प्रत्येक का पाणिग्रहण किया। वाल्मीकि जी ने उपमा अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हुए ब्रह्मदत्त की तुलना 'देवपति' (इन्द्र) से की है। यह तुलना केवल ऐश्वर्य में ही नहीं, बल्कि तेज और प्रभाव में भी है। जिस प्रकार इन्द्र का विवाह देवलोक में एक भव्य घटना होती है, उसी प्रकार यह विवाह भी पृथ्वी पर अलौकिक था। रघुनन्दन सम्बोधन राम के प्रति विश्वामित्र के स्नेह और कथा श्रवण में राम की एकाग्रता को सूचित करता है।
