Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेन पाप अनुबन्धेन वचनम् न प्रतीच्छता ।
एवम् ब्रुवंत्यः सर्वाः स्म वायुना अभिहता भृषम् ॥ ॥१-३३-४॥
Tena pāpa anubandhena vacanam na pratīcchatā |
Evam bruvaṃtyaḥ sarvāḥ sma vāyunā abhihatā bhṛṣam ॥1-33-4॥
Translation
Bound by sin, he did not accept our words. While we were speaking thus, all of us were severely struck (deformed) by Vayu.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पाप से युक्त उस वायु ने हमारे वचनों को स्वीकार नहीं किया। और इस प्रकार (धर्मसम्मत) बात कहती हुई हम सभी को उसने बहुत अधिक चोट पहुँचाई (कुबड़ा कर दिया)।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the tragic consequence of unbridled lust turning into wrath. Vayu is described as pāpa anubandhena (bound by sin), indicating that his moral compass was completely obscured by desire. Because he could not possess them illicitly, he refused to listen to their righteous logic. In a fit of rage, he used his elemental power to strike the maidens, deforming their physical forms while they were still speaking. This highlights the destructive nature of ego and power when detached from Dharma. It serves as a warning that rejection of wise counsel often leads the powerful to commit atrocities against the innocent, marking a transition from mere desire to active malevolence.

इस श्लोक में वायु के क्रोध और अहंकार का परिणाम दिखाया गया है। 'पाप अनुबन्धेन' शब्द यह सूचित करता है कि वायु की बुद्धि पाप से आच्छादित हो गई थी, इसलिए उसे कन्याओं का धर्मयुक्त प्रस्ताव भी स्वीकार्य नहीं हुआ। जब काम (इच्छा) पूरा नहीं होता, तो वह क्रोध में बदल जाता है—यही गीता का भी सिद्धांत है। वायु ने अपनी शक्ति का दुरुपयोग कर उन कोमल कन्याओं को शारीरिक दंड दिया। 'अभिहता' का अर्थ यहाँ उन्हें वायु के वेग से चोट पहुँचाकर कुबड़ा या विकृत कर देना है। यह श्लोक दर्शाता है कि जब शक्ति अनियंत्रित और विवेकहीन हो जाती है, तो वह निर्दोषों के लिए विनाशकारी बन जाती है, भले ही वह शक्ति किसी देवता की ही क्यों न हो।
