निष्पन्दाः तरवः सर्वे निलीना मृग पक्षिणः ।
नैशेन तमसा व्याप्ता दिशः च रघुनंदन ॥१-३४-१५॥
niṣpandāḥ taravaḥ sarve nilīnā mṛga pakṣiṇaḥ |
naiśena tamasā vyāptā diśaḥ ca raghunaṃdana ॥1-34-15॥
Translation
All the trees have become motionless; the beasts and birds have retreated into hiding. The directions are pervaded by the darkness of the night, O descendant of Raghu.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(देखो) सभी वृक्ष स्पंदन-रहित (स्थिर) हो गए हैं, पशु-पक्षी अपने ठिकानों में छिप गए (सो गए) हैं और हे रघुनन्दन! दिशाएं रात्रि के अंधकार से व्याप्त हो गई हैं।
English Commentary
This verse provides a poetic, atmospheric closure to the day. The imagery evokes deep silence and stillness: trees are niṣpandāḥ (motionless/without vibration), indicating a lack of wind. Animals and birds are nilīnā (merged/hidden in their nests). The phrase naiśena tamasā vyāptā (covered by nocturnal darkness) paints a picture of the encompassing night. This description serves a functional purpose—to emphasize that nature itself has retired, and so should the princes. It sets a calm, somewhat solemn mood before the night's rest.

वाल्मीकि रामायण अपनी प्रकृति-चित्रण (Nature imagery) के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। यहाँ रात्रि की नीरवता का अद्भुत वर्णन है। 'निष्पन्दाः तरवः' (वृक्ष स्थिर हैं) बताता है कि हवा भी थम गई है। 'निलीना मृग पक्षिणः' (पशु-पक्षी लीन हो गए हैं) जीवन की गतिविधियों के रुकने का संकेत है। यह शांति भयानक भी है और सुखद भी। विश्वामित्र राम को वातावरण की गंभीरता और रात्रि के प्रहर का प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव करा रहे हैं ताकि वे शीघ्र विश्राम करें। यह श्लोक सर्ग के समापन की ओर ले जाता है और रात्रि के दृश्य को स्थापित करता है।
