शनैः विसृज्यते संध्या नभो नेत्रैः इव आवृतम् ।
नक्षत्र तारा गहनम् ज्योतिर्भिः अवभासते ॥१-३४-१६॥
śanaiḥ visṛjyate saṃdhyā nabho netraiḥ iva āvṛtam |
nakṣatra tārā gahanam jyotirbhiḥ avabhāsate ॥1-34-16॥
Translation
The twilight is slowly fading away. The sky, dense with constellations and stars, appears as if covered by countless eyes, shining forth with their lights.

संध्या (गोधूलि) धीरे-धीरे विदा हो रही है। आकाश नक्षत्रों और तारों के समूह से ऐसा भरा हुआ है मानो वह (हजारों) नेत्रों से आच्छादित हो। वह अपनी ज्यौतियों से जगमगा रहा है।
English Commentary
This verse employs vivid imagery to describe the transition from twilight to deep night. The phrase nabho netraiḥ iva āvṛtam (sky covered as if with eyes) is a striking metaphor. In Indian poetics, the night sky is often personified; here, the stars act as the watchful eyes of the cosmos. This imagery serves a dual purpose: it highlights the beauty of the starlit sky and subtly suggests the vigilance required at night in a forest inhabited by dangers. The word gahanam (dense/deep) emphasizes the sheer number of stars illuminating the darkness.

यहाँ महर्षि विश्वामित्र रात्रि के आगमन का अत्यंत कलात्मक वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'विसृज्यते संध्या' का अर्थ है कि दिन और रात के मिलन का समय अब समाप्त हो रहा है और पूर्ण अंधकार छा रहा है। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ एक अद्भुत उपमा दी है—'नभो नेत्रैः इव आवृतम्'। आकाश में चमकते हुए तारे ऐसे प्रतीत हो रहे हैं मानो आकाश हजारों आँखों से पृथ्वी को देख रहा हो। यह उपमा रात्रि की सतर्कता और रहस्यमयता को बढ़ाती है। 'नक्षत्र' और 'तारा' दोनों शब्दों का प्रयोग आकाशीय पिंडों की विविधता और उनकी घनी उपस्थिति (गहनम्) को दर्शाता है।
