उत्तिष्ठते च शीतांशुः शशी लोक तमो नुदः ।
ह्लादयन् प्राणिनाम् लोके मनांसि प्रभया स्वया ॥१-३४-१७॥
uttiṣṭhate ca śītāṃśuḥ śaśī loka tamo nudaḥ |
hlādayan prāṇinām loke manāṃsi prabhayā svayā ॥1-34-17॥
Translation
And now rises the Moon, the possesor of cool rays, the dispeller of the world's darkness. He gladdens the hearts of living beings in this world with his own radiance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
और देखो, संसार के अंधकार को दूर करने वाले, शीतल किरणों वाले चन्द्रमा (शीतांशु) उदित हो रहे हैं। वे अपनी प्रभा (चांदनी) से लोक में प्राणियों के मन को आह्लादित कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
The rising of the moon acts as a soothing counterpoint to the encroaching darkness. The moon is referred to as śītāṃśuḥ (having cool rays), contrasting with the harsh sun of the day. The physiological and psychological impact of moonlight is noted here—it hlādayan (gladdens/delights) the minds of all creatures. In the context of the narrative, this serene imagery provides a brief moment of respite and beauty for the travelers before the sage reminds them of the nocturnal dangers lurking in the shadows.

पिछले श्लोक में तारों का वर्णन था, अब चन्द्रोदय का दृश्य है। चन्द्रमा के लिए 'शीतांशु' (शीतल किरणों वाला) और 'तमो नुदः' (अंधकार नाशक) विशेषण प्रयुक्त हुए हैं। दिन की तपन के बाद चन्द्रमा की शीतलता प्राणियों को सुख देती है, इसलिए कहा गया है 'ह्लादयन्... मनांसि' (मनों को प्रसन्न करते हुए)। वनवास और कठिन यात्रा के मध्य, चन्द्रमा का उदय राम और लक्ष्मण के लिए भी मानसिक शांति का स्रोत है। प्रकृति का यह सौम्य रूप भयानक रात्रि (जिसका वर्णन अगले श्लोक में है) के बीच एक आश्वासन की भांति है।
