भगवन् श्रोतुम् इच्छामि गङ्गाम् त्रि पथ गाम् नदीम् ।
त्रैलोक्यम् कथम् आक्रम्य गता नद नदीपतिम् ॥ ॥१-३५-१२॥
Bhagavan śrotum icchāmi gaṅgām tri patha gām nadīm । Trailokyam katham ākramya gatā nada nadīpatim ॥ ॥1-35-12॥
Translation
O Lord, I wish to hear about the Ganga, the river that flows through three paths. How did she traverse the three worlds to reach the Lord of Rivers (the Ocean)?
हिंदी अनुवाद
(राम पूछते हैं) हे भगवन्! मैं त्रिपथगा (तीन मार्गों से जाने वाली) नदी गंगा के विषय में सुनना चाहता हूं कि वे किस प्रकार तीनों लोकों को व्याप्त करके नद-नदियों के पति (समुद्र) तक पहुंचीं?
English Commentary
Rama poses the central question that leads to the recounting of the Ganga Avatarana (Descent of the Ganga). He addresses Vishvamitra as Bhagavan (Lord/Venerable one) and expresses his desire to hear (śrotum icchāmi) the history of the river. He specifically uses the epithet Tripathagā (Goer of three paths/worlds), indicating he is aware of her celestial nature. The question focuses on her trajectory: traversing the three worlds (trailokyam ākramya) to reach the Ocean (nada nadīpatim). This query opens the door to one of the most famous mythologies in Hinduism regarding King Sagara, Bhagiratha, and the salvation of the ancestors.
