अथ ज्येष्ठाम् सुराः सर्वे देव कार्य चिकीर्षया ।
शैलेन्द्रम् वरयामासुः गंगाम् त्रि पथ गाम् नदीम् ॥ ॥१-३५-१७॥
Atha jyeṣṭhām surāḥ sarve deva kārya cikīrṣayā । Śailendram varayāmāsuḥ gaṅgām tri patha gām nadīm ॥ ॥1-35-17॥
Translation
Then, all the Devas, wishing to accomplish a divine purpose, asked the King of Mountains for the elder daughter, the river Ganga, who flows through three paths.

तदनंतर, सभी देवताओं ने देव-कार्य सिद्ध करने की इच्छा से, तीनों लोकों में बहने वाली (त्रिपथगा) नदी, उस ज्येष्ठ कन्या गंगा को, शैलेन्द्र (हिमवान) से मांगा।
English Commentary
The gods (Suras) approach Himavat with a formal request (varayāmāsuḥ) for Ganga. The phrase deva kārya cikīrṣayā (desiring to perform divine work) implies that Ganga was essential for the cosmic machinery and could not remain confined to the Himalayas. This marks the first separation of Ganga from her home. The epithet tripathagām (flowing in three paths) is used proleptically here, anticipating her future flow through heaven, earth, and the netherworld.

देवताओं को गंगा की आवश्यकता 'देव कार्य चिकीर्षया' (देवताओं का कार्य करने की इच्छा) के लिए पड़ी। यह स्पष्ट नहीं किया गया है कि वह कार्य क्या था, लेकिन यह गंगा की नैसर्गिक दिव्यता और शक्ति को दर्शाता है—वे जन्म से ही सामान्य नदी नहीं थीं। देवताओं ने विधिवत हिमवान से 'वरयामासुः' (याचना की/मांगा)। गंगा को यहाँ पुनः 'त्रिपथगा' कहा गया है, जो भविष्य में उनके स्वर्ग, मर्त्य और पाताल में बहने का संकेत है।
