Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
या च अन्या शैल दुहिता कन्या आसीत् रघुनंदन ।
उग्रम् सुव्रतम् आस्थाय तपः तेपे तपोधना ॥ ॥१-३५-२०॥
Yā ca anyā śaila duhitā kanyā āsīt raghunaṃdana । Ugram suvratam āsthāya tapaḥ tepe tapodhanā ॥ ॥1-35-20॥
Translation
O Raghunanadana, the other daughter of the Mountain (Uma), considering asceticism as her wealth, performed severe penance, holding firm to strict vows.

हे रघुनंदन! (हिमवान की) जो दूसरी कन्या (उमा) थी, उस तपोधना (तप को ही धन मानने वाली) ने कठोर व्रतों को धारण कर उग्र तपस्या की।
English Commentary
Contrast is drawn here between the two sisters. While Ganga flows away, Uma remains rooted in asceticism. She is described as tapodhanā—one whose wealth is penance. She undertook ugram tapaḥ (terrible/intense penance). This refers to the rigorous sadhana Parvati performed to win Lord Shiva. The verse highlights the virtue of Tapas (spiritual heat/discipline) which is a central theme in the Ramayana. Addressing Rama as Raghunandana connects the listener's lineage to these ancient traditions of austerity.

अब कथा छोटी बहन उमा की ओर मुड़ती है। गंगा का स्वभाव 'गति' (प्रवाह) है, जबकि उमा का स्वभाव 'स्थिति' (तपस्या) है। उन्हें 'तपोधना' कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है वह जिसके लिए तप ही संपत्ति हो। 'उग्रम्' शब्द बताता है कि उनकी तपस्या साधारण नहीं थी, बल्कि अत्यंत कठोर थी। उमा ने शिव को पति रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिए यह तप किया था (यद्यपि यहाँ स्पष्ट नहीं लिखा, पर संदर्भ यही है)। 'सुव्रतम्' का अर्थ है उत्तम और दृढ़ संकल्प।
