अयम् शोणः शुभ जलो गाधः पुलिन मण्डितः ।
कतरेण पथा ब्रह्मन् संतरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥ ॥१-३५-४॥
Ayam śoṇaḥ śubha jalo gādhaḥ pulina maṇḍitaḥ । Katareṇa pathā brahman saṃtariṣyāmahe vayam ॥ ॥1-35-4॥
Translation
(Rama asks) O Brahman! This Sone river has auspicious waters, is shallow, and is adorned with sandbanks. By which path shall we cross it?

(श्री राम पूछते हैं) हे ब्रह्मन्! यह शोण नद, जिसका जल अत्यंत पवित्र और सुंदर है, जो उथला है और बालुई तटों (पुलिन) से सुशोभित है—हम इसे किस मार्ग से पार करेंगे?
English Commentary
Rama asks Vishvamitra for logistical guidance regarding the crossing of the Shona (Sone) river. The adjectives used paint a serene picture: śubha jalo (auspicious/clean water) and pulina maṇḍitaḥ (decorated with sandbanks). The word gādhaḥ implies the river was fordable (shallow enough to walk across). Despite the river seeming easily crossable, Rama's inquiry, 'By which path?' demonstrates his reliance on the Guru's wisdom. It illustrates the ideal behavior of a shishya (disciple) who, regardless of his own competence, defers to the experience of the teacher when navigating new territories, be they geographical or spiritual.

इस श्लोक में शोण नद (Sone River) का भौगोलिक वर्णन है। 'शुभ जलो' (पवित्र जल) और 'पुलिन मण्डितः' (रेत के टीलों से सजा हुआ) जैसे विशेषण नदी की सुंदरता को दर्शाते हैं। 'गाधः' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है, जिसका अर्थ है 'उथला' या जहाँ पानी कम हो, जिससे यह पता चलता है कि नदी को पैदल या आसानी से पार किया जा सकता था। श्री राम यहाँ विनम्रता और विवेक का परिचय देते हुए अपने गुरु से मार्गदर्शन मांग रहे हैं। यद्यपि नदी पार करने योग्य दिख रही है, फिर भी वे 'कतरेण पथा' (किस मार्ग से) पूछकर यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि अनजान क्षेत्र में गुरु या मार्गदर्शक का निर्णय ही सर्वोपरि होता है।
