न लोका धारयिष्यन्ति तव तेजः सुरोत्तम ।
ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तो देव्या सह तपः चर ॥१-३६-१०॥
na lokā dhārayiṣyanti tava tejaḥ surottama |
brāhmeṇa tapasā yukto devyā saha tapaḥ cara ॥1-36-10॥
Translation
O Best of Gods! The worlds will not be able to sustain Your energy. Therefore, united with the austerity of Brahman, may You practice penance along with the Goddess.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुरोत्तम! तीनों लोक आपके (अमोघ) तेज को धारण करने में समर्थ नहीं होंगे। अतः आप ब्रह्म-तप से युक्त होकर देवी (उमा) के साथ तपस्या ही करें।
English Commentary
The gods clearly state the existential threat: the cosmos ("Lokas") lacks the capacity to contain or sustain ("Dharayishyanti") Shiva's "Tejas" (potency/energy). Addressing Him as "Surottama" (Best of Gods), they propose a sublimation of this energy. Instead of physical procreation, they request him to engage in "Brahmena tapasa" (austerity related to Brahman/spiritual reality). Interestingly, they suggest he do this "Devya saha" (along with the Goddess). This implies a request for the divine couple to shift their union from a physical plane to a metaphysical, ascetic plane, thereby preserving the universe from the destructive heat of their offspring.

यहाँ देवता अपनी चिंता का मूल कारण बताते हैं: शिव का 'तेज' (वीर्य/ऊर्जा) इतना प्रचंड है कि ब्रह्मांड उसका भार नहीं सह सकता। 'न लोका धारयिष्यन्ति'—यह असमर्थता की स्पष्ट स्वीकृति है। समाधान के रूप में, वे शिव से अनुरोध करते हैं कि वे मैथुन से विरत होकर 'ब्राह्मेण तपसा' (ब्रह्म संबंधी तप) में लीन हो जाएं। वे यह नहीं कहते कि शिव देवी को त्याग दें, बल्कि सुझाव देते हैं कि वे 'देव्या सह' (देवी के साथ) मिलकर तपस्या करें। यह श्लोक भोग और योग के बीच के संक्रमण को दर्शाता है, जहाँ देवता शिव को पुनः उनके तपस्वी स्वरूप में लौटने का आग्रह कर रहे हैं।
