एवम् उक्ताः ततो देवाः प्रत्यूचुर् वृषभ ध्वजम् ।
यत् तेजः क्षुभितम् हि अद्य तद् धरा धारयिष्यति ॥१-३६-१५॥
evam uktāḥ tato devāḥ pratyūcur vṛṣabha dhvajam |
yat tejaḥ kṣubhitam hi adya tad dharā dhārayiṣyati ॥1-36-15॥
Translation
Being addressed thus, the gods replied to the One having a bull on His flag (Shiva), "That energy which has been stirred today, the Earth shall hold it."

ऐसा कहे जाने पर, देवताओं ने वृषभध्वज (शिव) को उत्तर दिया—"जो तेज आज क्षुभित (विचलित) हुआ है, उसे धरा (पृथ्वी) धारण करेगी।"
English Commentary
Faced with Shiva's query, the gods nominate the Earth. They address Shiva as "Vrishabha dhvajam" (The Bull-bannered One). Their solution relies on the etymological and functional nature of the Earth as "Dhara" (The Supporter/Holder). They believe that the physical foundation of the universe is the only entity robust enough to act as a receptacle for Shiva's "Kshubhitam" (displaced) energy. This decision sets in motion the events leading to the birth of Skanda and explains why the Earth suffers scorching heat in the mythological narrative.

शिव के प्रश्न का उत्तर देवताओं ने तुरंत दिया। उन्होंने 'वृषभ ध्वज' (जिनकी ध्वजा पर बैल है, यानी धर्म का प्रतीक) भगवान शिव से कहा कि इस तेज को 'धरा' (पृथ्वी) धारण करेगी। पृथ्वी को 'धरा' (धारण करने वाली) कहा जाता है, इसलिए देवताओं को लगा कि वही इस भार को सहने में समर्थ है। यह निर्णय पृथ्वी के लिए कष्टकारी था, परन्तु देवताओं के पास कोई अन्य विकल्प नहीं था। यह श्लोक पृथ्वी की सहनशीलता और देवताओं की विवशता दोनों को उजागर करता है।
