अपत्यम् स्वेषु दारेषु न उत्पदयितुम् अर्हथ ।
अद्य प्रभृति युष्माकम् अप्रजाः सन्तु पत्नयः ॥१-३६-२१॥
apatyam sveṣu dāreṣu na utpadayitum arhatha |
adya prabhṛti yuṣmākam aprajāḥ santu patnayaḥ ॥1-36-21॥
Translation
"...(Therefore) You shall not be capable of producing offspring in your own wives. From today onwards, may your wives remain without children."

"...(अतः) अब तुम लोग अपनी पत्नियों में संतान उत्पन्न नहीं कर सकोगे। आज से तुम्हारी पत्नियां संतानहीन (अप्रजा) रहें।"
English Commentary
This verse delivers the potent curse that defines the reproductive nature of the Vedic pantheon in this cycle. Uma decrees that the gods will be unable to procreate ("Na utpadayitum arhatha") with their own consorts. The phrase "Adya prabhriti" (from today onwards) marks a permanent alteration in the celestial order. This curse serves as the mythological explanation for why celestial beings (Devas) do not have biological progeny in the manner of humans. It creates a tragic irony: in trying to prevent one dangerous child, the gods lost the ability to have their own children.

यह एक ऐतिहासिक और पौराणिक महत्व का शाप है। देवी उमा देवताओं को श्राप देती हैं कि जैसे उन्होंने उमा को पुत्र सुख से वंचित किया, वैसे ही वे भी अपनी पत्नियों ('स्वेषु दारेषु') से संतान सुख प्राप्त नहीं कर पाएंगे। यही कारण है कि पौराणिक मान्यताओं में देवताओं की 'मानसिक' संतानें होती हैं या वे अंश रूप में जन्म लेते हैं, परन्तु वैदिक देवताओं का सामान्य जैविक वंश नहीं चलता। उमा का यह दंड 'जैसे को तैसा' न्याय पर आधारित था। यह शाप देवताओं की अमरता और उनके पारिवारिक ढांचे को सदैव के लिए बदल देता है।
