न च पुत्र कृताम् प्रीतिम् मत् क्रोध कलुषीकृताऽ ।
प्राप्स्यसि त्वम् सुदुर्मेधे मम पुत्रम् अनिच्छती ॥१-३६-२३॥
na ca putra kṛtām prītim mat krodha kaluṣīkṛtā |
prāpsyasi tvam sudurmedhe mama putram anicchatī ॥1-36-23॥
Translation
"And, O Evil-minded one! Polluted by my anger, you shall not obtain the joy caused by a son, because you did not desire my son."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे दुर्बुद्धि! मेरे क्रोध से कलंकित होकर तुम पुत्र से मिलने वाली प्रसन्नता को प्राप्त नहीं करोगी, क्योंकि तुमने मेरे पुत्र (के जन्म) की इच्छा नहीं की।"
English Commentary
Uma calls Earth "Sudurmedhe" (One of very bad intellect), chastising her for complicity in the gods' plan. The logic of the curse is rooted in emotional reciprocity: because Earth did not want Uma to have her son (by agreeing to take the energy herself), Earth herself is denied the "Pritim" (affection/joy) of motherhood. Even though Earth technically carried the energy, she is cursed to be "Mat krodha kalushikrita" (tainted by Uma's anger), preventing her from enjoying the maternal bond with the offspring (Mars/Mangala or Kartikeya) that arises from her.

उमा पृथ्वी को 'सुदुर्मेधे' (अत्यंत दुर्बुद्धि/मूर्ख) कहकर भर्त्सना करती हैं। उनका आरोप है कि पृथ्वी ने शिव के तेज को धारण करके उसे उमा के गर्भ में आने से रोक दिया, अर्थात उसने उमा के पुत्र को अस्वीकार किया ('मम पुत्रम् अनिच्छती')। दंड स्वरूप, उमा कहती हैं कि यद्यपि पृथ्वी शिव-तेज (भविष्य के कार्तिकेय) को धारण कर रही है, फिर भी उसे 'पुत्र कृताम् प्रीतिम्' (पुत्र से मिलने वाला स्नेह/सुख) नहीं मिलेगा। कार्तिकेय का पालन-पोषण कृतिकाओं और अग्नि द्वारा होगा, पृथ्वी केवल एक माध्यम बनकर रह जाएगी। उमा का क्रोध एक वंचित माँ का क्रोध है।
