यत् इह उत्पद्यते भूतम् कः तत् प्रतिसहिष्यति ।
अभिगम्य सुराः सर्वे प्रणिपत्य इदम् अब्रुवन् ॥१-३६-८॥
yat iha utpadyate bhūtam kaḥ tat pratisahiṣyati |
abhigamya surāḥ sarve praṇipatya idam abruvan ॥1-36-8॥
Translation
"Who will be able to withstand the being that is born here?" Thinking thus, all the gods approached (Shiva), and bowing down, spoke these words.

(देवता सोचने लगे) "यहाँ जो प्राणी उत्पन्न होगा, उसके तेज को कौन सहन कर सकेगा?" (ऐसा विचार कर) सभी देवता (शिव के पास) गए और प्रणाम करके यह बोले।
English Commentary
The core anxiety of the pantheon is revealed here: "Who will be able to withstand (Pratisahishyati) the being born of this union?" The gods feared that the offspring of the Supreme Destroyer (Shiva) and the Supreme Energy (Shakti) would possess power capable of consuming the universe. Motivated by this existential threat, they approached Lord Shiva. Their approach was not confrontational but reverential ("Pranipatya" - prostrating/bowing). This sets the scene for the gods' plea to Shiva to withhold his energy, a request that eventually leads to the seed of Shiva being cast aside and eventually taken up by Ganga.

यह श्लोक देवताओं की आशंका को स्पष्ट करता है। शिव और शक्ति के संयोग से उत्पन्न होने वाली संतान की शक्ति अपार होगी, जिसे धारण करना सृष्टि के लिए असंभव हो सकता है—यही प्रश्न ('कः तत् प्रतिसहिष्यति') देवताओं को व्याकुल कर रहा था। वे भयभीत होकर नहीं, बल्कि विनम्रतापूर्वक ('प्रणिपत्य' - प्रणाम करके) महादेव के पास गए। वे शिव की स्तुति और प्रार्थना करने के उद्देश्य से वहां पहुंचे ताकि इस सृजन को रोका जा सके या नियंत्रित किया जा सके। यह श्लोक देवताओं की कूटनीति और शिव के प्रति उनके भयमिश्रित आदर को दर्शाता है।
